Before We Build does not use a type as a personality type or kind of person. In plain language, it is a type of perception and experience organization; technically, a type pattern is a compact, revisable hypothesis about how a narrower process may select, order, interpret, or organize experience. The project borrows structures from source traditions but does not inherit every traditional or popular interpretation.

Definition and scope

Socionics is assigned to information modelling, Psychosophy to analysis, synthesis, and organization in action, and Temporistics to abduction, induction, and deduction in temporal or existential experience. In the central Socionics hypothesis, an aspect pairs a class of distinctions with an operation that preserves and updates a partial representation of one shared world; see Socionics as a Hypothesis of Latent Reality Modeling. “Perception” is an umbrella for selection, ordering, interpretation, and process organization, not sensory perception alone. The systems are non-equivalent and separately modelled.

Shared example

During relocation planning, one person repeatedly asks for concrete risk data. That trace might fit an information-modelling hypothesis. It does not show that the person “is a risk-averse type,” lacks faith, opposes the move, or has a fixed character.

What can be observed

Researchers can observe utterances, choices, task sequences, corrections, response to uncertainty, and changes across situations. A type is a summary imposed on those observations, not an observation itself.

What remains a hypothesis

The hypothesis is that some recurring structures capture latent-process differences that improve explanation or prediction beyond ordinary contextual variables. A further hypothesis is that some patterns reflect natural predispositions; this does not establish biological innateness, fixity, or context independence. Each claim has to be demonstrated separately for each construct and outcome.

Alternative explanations

Education, profession, family norms, language, incentives, fatigue, anxiety, role, and power may produce the same trace. A useful study compares these rivals instead of treating the type as a hidden essence.

What must not be inferred

Do not infer identity, character, morality, diagnosis, competence, life path, or relationship destiny from a type. Do not translate Psychosophy Emotion into Socionics ethics, Psychosophy Will into Socionics Se, or Temporistics Future into Socionics Ni.

Questions for conversation

  • Which concrete pattern are we trying to describe?
  • In which situations does it disappear?
  • Which rival explanation is at least as plausible?
  • Does the label improve the conversation, or only close it?

For a researcher

Operationalize the proposed construct independently of the type result, test inter-rater and temporal reliability, compare rival models, and preregister outcome-specific predictions. See Validation Program.
