Before We Build treats a Socionics aspect as a proposed pairing of a class of distinctions in reality with an operation that selects, compresses, organizes, and updates a partial representation of one shared world. The chain is: reality → aspectual selection → partial representation → inference or prediction → feedback → update. This is a central research hypothesis, not a historical definition, discovered brain module, or innate ability.

Definition and scope

Four layers must remain separate: aspectual content is what distinctions are preserved; aspectual operation is how they are organized; Model A position mode is the hypothesized way that operation is used; an observable trace is what a task or interaction actually records. A type code combines aspect and position hypotheses. It does not describe the whole person.

Shared example

During a relocation discussion, one representation may preserve changing living conditions, another available leverage and constraints, another the probable sequence of events, and another unrealized options. These are competing or complementary partial representations of the same move. The observation does not by itself identify an element or position.

Aspect and position are not the same

The aspect specifies which differences and relations a partial representation attempts to preserve. Model A positions propose different modes: stable foreground framing, flexible production, norm-guided use, vulnerable use under pressure, externally scaffolded intake, supported development, background monitoring, or automatic background production. These are hypotheses about use, not measured ranks of ability.

What can be observed

Researchers can record what a person notices without prompting, preserves after compression, infers in a novel task, revises after contradictory feedback, and omits. Comparable tasks, error patterns, response time, confidence calibration, and transfer are stronger evidence than thematic preference alone.

What remains hypothetical

It remains unestablished whether the eight operations are reliable constructs, whether Model A positions organize them, whether they improve prediction beyond expertise and standard cognitive measures, or whether any stable pattern has a natural basis.

Alternative explanations

Knowledge, occupation, language, culture, health, sensory access, motivation, role, stress, familiarity, and general cognitive demands can produce the same trace. Every interpretation must name plausible alternatives before assigning a type-like pattern.

What cannot be inferred

Do not infer intelligence, creativity, empathy, leadership, morality, vocation, diagnosis, compatibility, innateness, a neural location, or an exhaustive architecture of reality. All people may use all represented operations; the proposed difference concerns patterns, not ownership of a channel.

Conversation questions

  • Which distinction did each person preserve or lose?
  • Did they disagree about the world, the representation, or the decision rule?
  • What feedback would require each representation to change?
  • Could expertise, stress, language, or role explain the difference?

Researcher route

Define selection, compression, inference, and updating separately. Use parallel tasks, blinded coding, rival measures, repeated contexts, and held-out predictions. Keep aspect evidence separate from position evidence until both structures earn support.
