Purpose and evidence boundary
This derived source note collects neuroimaging reviews and meta-analyses used by Neural Correlates of Analysis and Synthesis Across Domains. It does not establish a neural basis for Psychosophy, Socionics, Temporistics, or any position within them. The studies concern laboratory tasks, not typological types.
In this note, analysis is a project shorthand for distinguishing and maintaining relevant elements, rules, constraints, or relations. Synthesis is a project shorthand for integrating them into a higher-order relation, valuation, interpretation, or action plan. These are not standard names for unitary brain modules.
Evidence ledger
| Domain / operation | Evidence | Narrow conclusion supported | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deductive reasoning | Quantitative meta-analysis of 28 studies | Different deductive arguments consistently recruit a left fronto-parietal system and left basal ganglia, with task-specific subsystems. | Does not locate a general human faculty of “analysis.” |
| Causal reasoning and mental models | Review of causality in thought | Causal inference relies on mental causal models and dynamic coordination between frontoparietal networks (rule-based deduction) and default-mode/hippocampal networks (scenario simulation). | Does not locate causal inference in a single isolated brain center. |
| Counterfactual reasoning and episodic memory trace | Review of memory and hypothetical simulation | Episodic memory provides building blocks for counterfactual simulation ("what if"), supporting retrospective causal attribution and learning from past experience. | Episodic reconstruction is constructive and fallible, not a fixed objective recording. |
| Inductive rule acquisition | fMRI study of rule acquisition and following | Mid-DLPFC was active during rule search and until successful acquisition; frontopolar cortex was active while an unfamiliar rule was acquired and followed. | A single task study is not a general neural map of induction. |
| Abduction / inference to the best explanation | Methodological review in cognitive neuroscience | In neuroimaging, reasoning backwards from activation to a cognitive process is itself an abductive, methodologically contested inference. | We did not identify a mature, convergent neuroimaging map for human abduction comparable to the deduction meta-analyses; do not invent one. |
| Mental time travel: autobiographical past and episodic future | Updated ALE meta-analysis | Both past remembering and future simulation involve midline structures, bilateral hippocampus/parahippocampus, angular gyrus, anterior middle temporal gyrus, and left superior frontal gyrus; future thinking also showed a right aMTG difference. | This concerns episodic remembering/imagination, not a typological temporal frame or duration perception. |
| Prospection and long-horizon choice | Meta-analysis of episodic future thinking interventions | Vivid, positive, delayed-choice-relevant future episodes can shift intertemporal choice toward larger delayed outcomes. | It does not measure an enduring Future-oriented type or establish a moral hierarchy of long-term planning. |
| Situation awareness and situated cognition | Foundational theory and review | Situation awareness involves perceiving status and dynamics of present environmental elements, comprehending their meaning, and projecting near-term states. | Laboratory SA metrics reflect domain training and task load, not an innate Present-type endowment. |
| Meaning-making and teleological reasoning | Integrative review of meaning making and teleological cognition review | Meaning-making is an active cognitive-interpretive process aligning appraised situational meaning with global beliefs and goals; teleological reasoning assesses overarching purpose. | Does not establish a moral hierarchy or validate typological Eternity positions. |
| Individual differences in time perspective | Psychometric validation of ZTPI | Time perspective operates as a continuous, multidimensional cognitive trait (Past-Negative, Past-Positive, Present-Hedonistic, Present-Fatalistic, Future). | Continuous psychometric profiles differ fundamentally from discrete 4-position permutation typologies. |
| Working-memory maintenance and manipulation | Coordinate meta-analysis of 189 fMRI experiments | A broad bilateral fronto-parietal network recurs across working-memory tasks. | The network supports multiple operations, not reasoning alone. |
| Relational integration / analogy | Review and synthesis | Posterior parietal cortex represents first-order relations; rostrolateral PFC is implicated in integrating relations; DLPFC supports working-memory maintenance and VLPFC interference control. | “Synthesis” in this project is broader than relational integration. |
| Cognitive control across tasks | Frontoparietal-network review | The frontoparietal network flexibly coordinates information processing with other networks under changing task demands. | Network labels and regional borders vary by method and individual. |
| Value-based decision | Meta-analysis of 206 fMRI studies | vmPFC and anterior ventral striatum commonly track subjective value; insula, dmPFC, striatum, and thalamus also participate in salience/arousal-related patterns. | A value signal is not a complete account of agency, morality, or a decision. |
| Effortful choice | Meta-analysis of 45 studies | mPFC/dACC, putamen, and anterior insula are recruited when reward and cognitive demand are processed; caudal mPFC/dACC may integrate demand and reward. | This 2026 result is informative but does not prove a single “effort calculator.” |
| Multi-step planning / logistics-like puzzles | Tower of London meta-analysis | Planning and planning complexity recruit bilateral mid-DLPFC, frontal eye fields, supplementary motor area, precuneus, caudate, anterior insula, inferior parietal cortex, and left rostrolateral PFC. | A laboratory planning puzzle is only a partial analogue of real household, financial, or material logistics. |
| Spatial route planning | Review of cognitive maps | Hippocampus and entorhinal cortex support map-like spatial codes; parahippocampal and retrosplenial cortices anchor maps to landmarks; frontal mechanisms support route plans. | Navigating a route is not identical to organizing possessions, money, food, health, or home maintenance. |
| Interoception / bodily state in decisions | ALE and connectivity meta-analysis | Right dorsal anterior insula overlaps across interoception, decision-making, and emotion regulation; dACC is shared by decision-making and emotion regulation; the coactivation pattern includes bilateral insula, dACC, and thalamus. | This is not an anatomical definition of a project “Physics” aspect or proof of greater bodily awareness. |
| Spoken interaction / tactical coordination | Systematic review of hyperscanning in spoken communication | During spoken interaction, studies report interpersonal neural alignment, predominantly in frontal and temporo-parietal areas, across turn-taking, knowledge sharing, cooperation, and discussion paradigms. | Alignment is not a direct measure of truth, consent, mutual understanding, or relationship quality. |
| Dyadic autonomic regulation | HRV meta-analysis in social interaction | Negative dyadic interactions reduce HRV on average; the literature does not show that social interaction generally raises HRV from baseline. | HRV is context-, person-, and measurement-dependent; it is not a compatibility score. |
| Stress as a cross-level constraint | Systematic review and meta-analysis of allostatic load and cognition | Higher allostatic load is associated cross-sectionally with poorer global cognition and executive function; effects are small. | This evidence is not dyadic and does not establish causality or a type-specific vulnerability. |
| Interpersonal synchrony: interpretation limit | Systematic review of interpersonal autonomic physiology | Physiological activity can become interdependent across people in many relationship contexts, but the field is fragmented and methods vary. | Synchrony may reflect shared task demands, shared stress, co-regulation, or co-dysregulation; it is not inherently good. |
| Cognitive reappraisal of emotion | Amygdala–prefrontal connectivity meta-analysis | Reappraisal reliably modulates amygdala connectivity with VLPFC; down-regulation also shows connectivity with DLPFC and dmPFC. | This is one emotion-regulation strategy, not emotion as a whole. |
| Reappraisal versus acceptance | ALE meta-analysis | Both strategies showed increased left inferior frontal gyrus and insula, but their patterns differ. | Do not assume every healthy regulation strategy is top-down control. |
| Emotion representation | Review of multivariate evidence | Affective dimensions and emotion categories are represented in distributed cortical and subcortical patterns. | It rules against simple one-emotion/one-region maps; it does not make any psychological taxonomy biologically validated. |
Measurement warning
Task fMRI usually measures the BOLD signal: a delayed, indirect indicator of local blood oxygenation related to neural activity. It is not a direct image of a thought, a trait, a latent process, or ATP use. PET, EEG/MEG, lesions, behavior, and connectivity analyses answer different parts of the question.
Safe project use
- Use these results to design domain-specific tasks and candidate outcome measures.
- Treat the findings as mechanism-adjacent context, not type markers.
- Pre-register any claim that a project scale predicts task performance or neural measures; compare it with non-typological explanations such as ability, training, stress, sleep, current mood, and task familiarity.
Source Assessment
What the Source Claims
The reviewed neuroscience literature relates analysis, integration, planning, and synthesis tasks to distributed and partly overlapping brain networks.
Data or Evidence Provided
The page cites peer-reviewed studies and reviews with their reported tasks and neural findings; it adds no new participant-level data.
Limitations
Tasks and definitions vary, localization is many-to-many, and the cited studies did not directly measure Psychosophy or BWB operational constructs.
What BWB Accepts
BWB accepts the literature for candidate task operationalizations, observable indicators, and safeguards against simplistic localization.
What Remains Contested or Open
A direct mapping from analysis or synthesis to Psychosophy positions, and any causal interpretation of that mapping, remains open.
Rejected or Historical-Only
BWB rejects treating a network correlate as a type biomarker, an established latent mechanism, or a basis for diagnosing an individual.
