Before We Build distinguishes what the project defines, what a source reports, what the project hypothesizes, what evidence currently supports, and what an application recommends. A clear label does not make a weak claim stronger; it makes the uncertainty visible.

Definition and scope

Use these claim classes: project definition, normative rule, source attribution, research hypothesis, evidence-informed claim, empirically supported claim, contested claim, rejected claim, application guidance, and historical proposal. “Empirically supported” requires relevant and independently assessable evidence; it is not a synonym for plausible.

Shared example

“They postponed the move twice” is an observation. “They disagree about the future” is an interpretation. “A Temporistics pattern explains the disagreement” is a research hypothesis. “They should not move” is practical or normative guidance. Each step needs its own justification.

What can be observed

Documents, statements, recorded conduct, measurement results, and outcomes may be observed. Even these require provenance, time, population, context, and an account of missing evidence.

What remains a hypothesis

The four-level architecture is a project definition and research map. A type is a model hypothesis about perception and experience organization, not a personality type. Whether the three typologies validly measure proposed latent processes, predict pair outcomes, or reflect natural predispositions remains to be established; the last claim does not establish biological innateness.

Alternative explanations

A relationship outcome can reflect selection effects, opportunity, power, resources, skill, health, life stage, culture, or chance. A result consistent with a typological story does not isolate that story as the cause.

What must not be inferred

Do not infer values from type, causation from correlation, stability from one episode, universality from one culture, pair compatibility from individual test scores, or safety from smooth communication. No strength at another level offsets coercion, violence, or exploitation.

Questions for conversation

  • What kind of claim is this sentence?
  • What evidence would justify a stronger status?
  • What is missing or selected out?
  • Who may be harmed if uncertainty is hidden?
  • What decision remains for the people involved?

For a researcher

Prespecify constructs, outcomes, populations, exclusions, rival hypotheses, and decision thresholds. Report null and contradictory findings. Preserve raw sources without treating them as endorsed conclusions.
